In 1876, the first metric thread was introduced in Europe. After many years and multiple standardizations, the ISO standard metric thread became the global standard in nearly every industry. And over the last 50 years as businesses tried to standardize globally, companies began producing metric system-based materials to save time and money. Less unit conversions, less tools required, and materials that were more readily available made the metric thread the most common general screw used throughout the world.
An ISO metric thread consists of a symmetric V-shaped thread with V-flanks that are angled at 60° to each other. Metric threads are available in a wide range of materials, styles and sizes for each industry. At Rolled Threads Unlimited, ours are available with multiple starts and right/left-handed threads. Our metric rolling capabilities range from:
· 2mm thru 160mm in diameter
· .4mm to 8mm pitch with both M and MJ profiles
· Classes of fit include 4e, 4g, 4h, 6e, 6g, 6h, and modified dimensions
The “M” signifier indicates the nominal outer diameter, or the screw thread dictated in millimeters, commonly referred to as the “major” diameter. This helps define the diameter of the smooth-walled hole that a male thread will pass through to connect to another component. For example, an M6 screw has an outer diameter of 6 millimeters, and will fit in a hole drilled to 6 millimeters in diameter. Our specifications for these include:
· ANSI/ASME B1.13M
· ASME/ANSI B1.21M
With an inventory that includes over 350 sets of metric thread rolling dies in a wide selection of thread pitches and finish diameters, Rolled Threads Unlimited has the quality parts to get your job done. Contact us today to learn more.
